The heat of summer is intensified by high humidity. This area is prone to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, generally in the springtime. While coastal sections see the most cloudy days statewide, northern sections see the most sunny days. This is due to the Gulf of Mexico currents that carry humid air to the region. More than 60 inches annually of rain falls in the far eastern portion. This region in eastern Texas receives more rainfall than any other region in the state. Driving off-road vehicles (dirt bikes and small 4-wheelers) and horseback riding are two of the other most popular recreational sports in the Sam Houston National Forest. Lake Livingston and Lake Conroe are both well-known for their year-round fishing of black bass.Also, both lakes offer pleasure boating and other water sports. Other things to do near Point Blank/Sam Houston National Forest include nature viewing of the thousands of colorful wildflowers, redbud tree blossoms and dogwood trees in spring (which is February and March in Texas.) There's also picnicking, swimming, canoeing, paddle boating, fishing, boating and hunting at Sam Houston National Park. The trails can be hiked year round, although winter and spring are the most popular seasons due to the milder climate. There are also three developed campgrounds in the forest. Except during hunting season when camping is restricted to designated camps, primitive camping is allowed off the trail. It contains the 28-mile Lone Star Hiking Trail, a portion of which has gained National Recreation Trail status.
